4507 S. Main

Residents are soon moving into 4507 S. Main, a mixed-use development designed to serve as a bridge between the commercial core of Downtown Los Angeles and the residential neighborhoods of South LA. This four-story building combines affordable and supportive housing with commercial space, creating a transition through architecture and planning between the neighborhoods.

A front-stoop portal looking into the open-air courtyard invites passersby and residents to interact, connecting the residential and commercials spaces. Inside the courtyard, residents have ample seating and lush, tropical landscaping, further building community and connections to the outdoors. Covered outdoor walkways link units and peer out onto both the courtyard and Main Street, further blending the two spaces.

The building’s concrete façade, accented by wood-framed windows, ties in precedents of the surrounding historic design language with more modern elements. 4507 S. Main shows how design can create a transitional spaces that honor existing neighborhoods, while celebrating diverse communities and a shared future.
