Sombra de Verde

10 Acre STEAM Middle School Campus

Sombra de Verde is a design scheme for the Griffith STEAM Magnet Middle School. The design ensures equitable acces to STEAM facilities, embracing flexible, adaptanle spaces that support diverse learning styles and foster creativity. Multilingual signage and culturally relevant architecture honor the heritage of East L.A.’s predominantly Mexican-American community. By embedding sustainability into the curriculum, the site itself becomes a pedagogical tool, allowing students to engage in water conservation, regenerative gardening, and renewable energy systems. Community workshops extend these lessons to the broader neighborhood, promoting collective action in sustainability and resilience.

Addressing environmental justice, our project mitigates the urban heat island effect with shaded areas, tree canopies, and cool roofing strategies. Drought-resistant landscaping and rainwater harvesting systems conserve resources while providing spaces for traditional agricultural practices. Quiet zones and wellness gardens nurture physical and emotional well-being, fostering positive academic outcomes.

The campus is a hub for cultural expression, featuring amphitheaters and gathering spaces for performances, festivals, and community programs. Its design reflects Chicano heritage through murals and landscaping, offering students and the community a sense of pride and belonging.

By creating a regenerative, inclusive environment, our project empowers students and the community to thrive, blending equity, culture, and sustainability into a transformative learning and living experience.
