Brown and Braun Gym

36,000 SF Gymnasium and Athletics Building Renovation

The Scott Brown Gymnasium, originally constructed in the 1950s, is a historic athletic facility on California Institute of Technology’s campus. Defined by its soaring gymnasium roof and clerestory locker room windows, the 1954 structure has remained one of only two athletic buildings serving the campus. Over time, however, the facility experienced significant deterioration. Its electrical and mechanical systems were outdated, and portions of the building did not meet current accessibility and building code requirements.

Practice worked closely with Caltech’s Athletics, Facilities, and Development teams through a highly collaborative process to assess existing conditions and align project goals with the institute’s long-term vision for campus wellness and athletics. This included detailed evaluations of seismic performance, fire-life safety systems, building infrastructure, and accessibility, as well as programming discussions to better support current and future student-athlete needs.

Together, the team developed a renovation strategy that balanced immediate upgrades with long-term flexibility. Practice's approach prioritized modernizing core building systems, improving circulation and accessibility, and enhancing the overall user experience, while respecting the building’s historic character. The completed first phase focused on the staff locker rooms, creating equitable facilities for men and women, and setting a new standard for inclusivity and wellness within the athletic program. The renovation reinforced Caltech’s commitment to supporting whole health and well-being as an integral part of its academic mission.
