The Azusa Santa Fe Train Depot project is an adaptive reuse of a long-vacant 1940s Streamline Moderne rail depot, transformed into a catalytic civic and transit amenity for the City of Azusa. Adjacent to LA Metro’s A Line station, the project preserves the building’s distinctive rounded corners, horizontal banding, and plaster and wood details while upgrading the structure for contemporary use as both a neighborhood landmark and everyday community resource.
Working closely with the City, the design team reprogrammed the approximately 2,000 square foot building into a flexible, café-style transit store and community-serving space that can adapt over time. Interior improvements enhance accessibility, circulation, and visibility to complement the historic shell while minimizing impacts to character-defining features.
Site and plaza improvements extend the project’s impact, creating a modest civic forecourt that improves safety, walkability, and wayfinding, reconnecting the depot to downtown Azusa.
